Committees & Session

Joining a committee is a great way to contribute to the church and your own spiritual growth while enjoying yourself and getting to know others in our congregation. Joining a committee does not necessarily require attending meetings or having a gregarious personality; committees also need volunteers for doing the quiet, behind-the-scenes work like record keeping and phone calls.

House Committee

Chair: Shared (Jeanette Regetz & Mike Mullins)

Responsibilities of the House Committee include:

  • Property: Arranges for maintenance and upkeep of all church buildings and property.
  • Personnel: Oversees all church employees including the pastor, parish associates, secretary and music director.

Finance Committee

In-House Committee

Co-chairs: Jeannette Regetz and Toni Bissessar

Responsibilities of the In-House Committee include:

  • Worship: Helps organize worship service, including communion.
  • Education: Organizes Sunday school for youth, Bible/discussion classes for adults.
  • Nurture: Plans social activities for all including after-church coffee hour, pot-luck dinners following church meetings, annual church picnic, Maundy Thursday dinner, dinner-for-six monthly pot-lucks, and more. Greets and welcomes visitors.

Outreach Committee

Chair: Terry Gaw

Responsibilities of the Outreach Committee include:

  • Missions: Proposes local and global charitable missions and conducts stewardship and special giving campaigns. Current missions include: Arlington Food Assistance Center, Souper Bowl, Secret Santa, and Pedals for Progress.
    Special offerings include
    : Church World Service Blanket Offering, Arlingtonians Ministering to Emergency Needs (AMEN), and Arlington Interfaith Council. Denominational offerings include: One Great Hour of Sharing, Peacemaking, and Christmas Joy Offering.
  • Special events: Organizes participation in community events and fairs.
  • Visitors: Works with In-House Committee to assure that visitors are welcomed and sent follow-up notes. With the pastor, provides training for greeters.
  • Publicity: Makes recommendations for advertising, including newspaper ads (in the Post, Washington Blade and other newspapers), Yellow Pages ads, flyers, Metro ads and co-op ads. Maintains a web page on the Internet.
  • More Light Church Network: Participates in presbytery, regional and national conferences of the More Light Network. Builds relationships with other More Light churches, and keeps congregation informed.

Nominating Committee

Chair: Gordon Hawthorne

The Nominating Committee meets once a year to nominate church members to be elders. They also meet as needed to replace departing elders or form special committees such as the Pastor Nominating Committee.


The Session

The session is the governing body of the church. Our session consists of our pastor, our associate pastors, and 12 elders who are elected by the congregation for 3-year terms. The session is charged with duties that range from the lofty to the mundane. According to the Presbyterian Church (USA) Book of Order, responsibilities of the session include:

  • Provide for worship, including preaching, music and communion.
  • Provide for growth of our members through personal and pastoral care, educational programs, fellowship, and opportunities for service.
  • Receive members into the church.
  • Provide for administration of the church and management of church property.
  • Delegate and supervise the work of the committees.
  • Maintain relationships with higher governing bodies of the church.
  • Provide stewardship of money, time and talents given by the members.
  • Lead the congregation in ministries of personal and social healing and reconciliation in the community.
  • Lead the congregation in participation in the mission of the whole Church in the world.
  • Lead the congregation continually to discover what God is doing in the world, and to plan for change, renewal, and reformation under the Word of God.
