Overview

Clarendon Presbyterian Church, a progressive, inclusive, and vibrant community of faith, seeks a part-time Director of Music to join its ministry team. 

Located in Arlington, Virginia, Clarendon welcomes all to gather at table, to be richly nourished in breaking bread and sharing cup, and to be sent into the world following the way of Jesus to nourish all our neighbors in body, mind and spirit. 

Clarendon is a small, vibrant congregation with a committed, enthusiastic and joyful choir of 8-12 singers. At Clarendon, music is an integral part of worship, and the congregation seeks an individual who can continue and deepen that tradition.

The Position

The Director of Music is a quarter-time position (10 hours per week) reporting to the Pastor and evaluated annually by the Session. (We are open to creating two positions: a choral conductor and an accompanist, with time and compensation adjusted accordingly.)

 

Primary Tasks

  • Plan and oversee the execution of the music program for regular and special worship services, working in collaboration with the Pastor and Worship Ministry Team.
  • Regular services: 1 per week (Sunday, 10:30 a.m.)
  • Special services: 7-8 per year (e.g. Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Music Sunday, Christmas Eve)
  • Weddings /funerals: 2-4 per year.
  • Direct the church choir and build participation in it.
  • Choir rehearsals: one pre-service rehearsal per week, plus bi-weekly mid-week rehearsals.
  • Catalogue and maintain the church’s music library.
  • Participate in quarterly Worship Ministry Team meetings.
  • Oversee the maintenance of the church’s musical instruments and music ministry-related equipment, working in collaboration with the Facilities and Personnel Ministry Team.
  • Develop and execute a strategy for growing congregational leadership and ownership of the music ministry, including a music ministry for young people.
  • Plan and execute special music-related events, including guest musicians for worship, concerts and recitals.

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree, formal training, or demonstrated experience in music; piano proficiency.
  • Experience leading music in a religious/worship setting; choral leadership preferred.
  • Self starter; entrepreneurial.
  • Demonstrated experience in a team setting.
  • Flexible schedule; availability to work weekends.
  • Experience in a religious, non-profit, or charitable setting preferred.

 

Compensation

Based on experience.
